Historic Black enclaves in Rhode Island were surprisingly numerous. They remain significant today because they represent groundbreaking early centers of autonomous Black culture, political activism, and economic resilience in America, while serving as direct physical reminders of the state's deep ties to the transatlantic slave trade. Despite severe systemic oppression, these neighborhoods laid the foundation for the nation’s earliest Black institutional networks.
